Gert Coetzee, seasoned journalist and former editor of Volksblad, talks about his novel Lens which is set during the political transition in South Africa (1988-1990). The main character, Chris Meyer, is a young journalist whose parents died in a car accident a decade earlier. His father was a politically enlightened advisor to the government at the time. Chris tries to unravel the mysterious circumstances of the accident, and discovers that there is a connection to the double murder of Dr Robert and Jeanne-Cora Smit in 1977. The words “RAU TEM” written on the wall of the murder house play a key role in the story.
