Queen is a visually striking graphic novel that brings to life the powerful story of Queen, a transgender woman navigating the complexities of her identity and past. She is drawn into the enchanting world of the Waterslang and Watermeid. Set against the backdrop of rich Khoisan mythology, this tale explores Queen’s journey as she grapples with her gender identity and the expectations placed on her by society, her family, and her own internalised fears. As a queer woman, Queen faces isolation and rejection, but also moments of deep connection and self-discovery. The vivid illustrations capture the intensity of her emotional landscape, as well as the mystical realms she encounters in her dreams. Through her interactions with the Waterslang, a symbol of protection and inner strength, and the Watermeid, a figure of transformation and fluidity, Queen’s journey becomes one of embracing her true self in the face of societal prejudice. Blending bold, expressive artwork with themes of resilience, identity and self-acceptance, Queen offers a heartfelt exploration of the transgender experience, celebrating the strength it takes to live authentically, not only in Queen’s story, but as a broader narrative of transformation, and the celebration of queer identity and empowerment.
