This experimental theatre production brings together three powerful elements: The vibrant life and legacy of Kewpie as a dancer and performer, Oudtshoorn’s rich tradition of pageant culture, referred to by locals as “models”, and the deeply personal stories gathered from over 25 oral narratives of the local queer community. At its core, the production is an artistic exploration of how these three elements intersect, revealing a dynamic narrative of identity, resilience, and community. Kewpie’s story, grounded in ballroom culture, forms the natural foundation for this performance. The inclusion of Oudtshoorn’s unique pageant culture and the lived experiences of the local queer community, further enrich the production, creating a layered and provocative portrayal of queer life in the Karoo. The production will run in tandem with an exhibition titled Kiki.
