WITH participants of the Proscenium Drama Competition

Ondersteun deur die Wes-Kaapse onderwysdepartement.

Eight dialogues produced after the first Proscenium Drama Competition in 2024 will be presented at the KKNK as part of the Youth Arts Festival. Experience the new, raw talent first hand – they may just be the stars of the future! The dialogues are divided into two groups, with four dialogues presented in each group.

Bonsai with Hendré Henning (Helpmekaar Kollege) and Zanje Bodenstein (PALI Youth), written by Gita Fourie and directed by Alby Michaels (Afrikaans).

Vaya Umlomo with Kwakhanya Mboniswa (Eersterivier High School) and Anoxolo Nkebe (Nomzamo High School), written by Miliswa Mbandazayo and directed by Mbulelo Grootboom (English and Xhosa).

Dis tradisie with Gianni de Lange (Riebeeckrand High School) and Brendan Kruger (Helpmekaar College), written by Adriaan Havenga and directed by Ilse Klink (Afrikaans).

Mamma roep my huis toe with Zander Oberholster (Martin Oosthuizen High School) and Roderick Carroll (Okiep High School), written by Miché van Wyk and directed by Barnie Mans (Afrikaans).

In 2024, the Proscenium Drama Competition received 647 entries and after the preliminary rounds, 70 candidates were selected to participate in the final rounds in Cape Town. Here, candidates competed over four rounds to determine the winners. The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) commissioned 15 writers to write dialogues that were suitable for young actors and for use in the classroom. During the final rounds of the Proscenium Drama Competition, a team from the WCED selected actors to perform the dialogues, under the guidance of several professional directors. The texts are in Afrikaans, English and Xhosa and cover a wide range of topics that appeal to a diverse audience of all ages. This production is a showcase of exciting new texts and the actors of tomorrow.
