Aardmoeder: A Performative Drawing

WITH Henk Serfontein and Hannah Loewenthal

Lines are an intrinsic part of the human body. In this work, they are simultaneously subjectively experienced and objectively observed. Subjective lines, such as sound waves and frequencies, are experienced through sensory and motor processes, whereas objective lines such as veins and bones can be observed visually. Vein-lines stretch to the very fingertips of the human body, whilst the skeleton forms an internal line drawing in bone.

A line drawing is the handwriting of an artist. An artist extends the fleeting subjective imagination in lines from his fingertips. From ash, powder and soot, the mark appears on paper at the very moment that the border between subjective and objective dissolves. The subconscious becomes visible as a line.

Because bodies move in response to the outer world, the body’s lines are objective, flexible and dynamic. Movement and dance become the active embodiment of the subjective awareness of sound waves in this performative drawing.

By experiencing the artistic model Aardmoeder (Earth Mother) as a meditation exercise repeatedly, the viewer is simultaneously introduced to both the subjective interior and the external objective, whilst the underlying connection with the earth returns to consciousness as the borders between inside and outside fade. In this performative drawing, an ecological response to the ecological consciousness as presented in Wilma Stockenström’s poem "Almoeder" is represented visually. “Recomposed Vivaldi - The Four Seasons” by contemporary classical composer Max Richter,  is used as soundtrack.

Artist Henk Serfontein and dancer Hannah Loewenthal weave a harmonious collective consciousness as an ecological response to the earth: A drawing is danced; a dance is drawn. The subconscious is experienced intuitively, whilst the typography of a primal landscape, as described in "Almoeder", is revealed physically. Artist and dancer harness their auditory senses to represent the heartbeat of the earth visually.

This mutual interaction between artist and dancer is continuously re-visited and deconstructed at specific times through the course of the festival.
