Die gevlerktes brings together two seasoned artists for an extraordinary production that combines a musical performance and animated film art. Diek Grobler is known as one of South Africa’s leading animation artists. Mareli Stolp has gained fame as a pianist who focuses on contemporary and avant-garde piano performance. For Die gevlerktes , Diek creates four new short films in response to works for solo piano, inspired by birds – the “winged ones” as referred to in the title. The title is taken from the poem of the same name by Susan Smith. The four piano works on which he bases his films are: “L’Alouette Calandrelle” by Olivier Messiaen, “La Poule” by Jean-Phillipe Rameau, “Ibis Hadeda” by Neo Muyanga and “On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring” by Frederick Delius. Diek’s films are shown while Mareli performs the piano works.
