Vrou met 27 kinders tells the true-life story of a childless couple. The husband, a sculptor, carves a baby out of wood for his wife every year, eventually making her 27 children out of wood. To her, they are not wooden dolls, but children of flesh and blood. After her husband’s death, some of his other sculptures are donated to the town’s museum. The story unfolds when museum workers want to take the woman’s “children” from her too. Universal themes like childlessness, a parent’s love, the love between a man and woman, as well as age, and dementia, are addressed - always against the backdrop of hope and light. Petru Wessels was seen in this same play at the KKNK in 1996.
