Ont- is a solo piece that analyses the coming of age of a young Afrikaner. The Narrator stands on the threshold of self-acceptance and liberation but must first take stock of his childhood memories and the ghosts of his parents. He places various objects such as family photos at the audience’s feet and takes them on a journey of loss, disillusionment, identity, pain and joy. He creates images and embodies the voices of his family with the help of poetry and a few charged objects that belonged to the family, including his mother’s gramophone. Ont- was first performed in 2011 and toured locally and internationally for five years (in both Afrikaans and English, as UndoneIt has won, among others, four Fiësta Awards, a Woordtrofee and a Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award. In this revisit of the material, the story, character and fictional memories are viewed through a more mature lens. Wessel Pretorius’ play now features Wian Taljaard on stage, with Pretorius directing.
